TERMS OF REFERENCE

  1. To establish standards and rules for the regulation of professional practice, conduct and practice management and in doing so:
    • keep under review the provisions of the LPO as they affect the legal profession and make recommendations for change to Council;
    • keep under review rules made under the LPO and make recommendations for change to Council;
    • assess the need for and approve new or revised practice directions (only major issues need be referred to the Council);
    • assess the need for and approve new or revised practice circular (no reference to the Council required);
    • specifically, assess the need for PD's or circular on aspects of practice management as well as professional practice and conduct; and,
    • keep under review codes of conduct.

  2. To prepare, keep under review and issue a Solicitors Guide covering all of the above.

  3. To set education and training standards for the profession covering:
    • pre-qualification requirements (i.e. entry to studies for the solicitors qualification)
    • qualification as solicitors
    • post qualification education, training and experience
    • employees of solicitors

  4. To formulate LS policy on handling requests from issues of ethics, conduct or practice management; and to respond to such requests where appropriate.

  5. To recommend policy and arrangements for pricing any LS publications or services arising out of the above.
